Re-bonding Your Surface Logo and Seam Tape
A step by step guide to re-bonding your swimwear at home in five minutes.
The wave logo and the outer seam tape on your Surface suit are bonded on with the same heat-activated tape, so if an edge of either starts to lift you can bond it back down at home in about five minutes with a regular iron and a sheet of baking paper. Take your time and follow the steps in order. If anything looks wrong, stop and send us a photo.
What you'll need
- A household iron with the steam turned off and the water tank emptied
- Baking paper (parchment paper), one sheet large enough to cover the logo
- A cotton towel, folded once
- A firm, flat, heat-safe surface such as a table or countertop (a heavily padded ironing board absorbs too much pressure)
- About 5 minutes, plus 24 hours before swimming
Step by step
-
Start clean and dry. Rinse the suit in cool fresh water so no sunscreen, salt or chlorine is left under the logo. Let it dry completely. Moisture or residue will stop the logo from bonding.
-
Set the iron. Choose the synthetic or silk setting (about 130 to 150°C) with steam off. Let it heat for a couple of minutes so the temperature is steady.
-
Lay it flat. Put the folded towel on the table and lay the suit on it, logo facing up. Smooth the fabric so it is flat but not stretched. Press any lifted edges of the logo or tape back into place with your finger. For a seam, let it sit relaxed along its natural curve rather than pulling it straight.
-
Cover the area. Place baking paper over the logo or the lifted part of the seam tape so it is fully covered. The iron should never touch the logo, the tape or the fabric directly.
-
Press. Press straight down with firm pressure for 10 to 15 seconds. Do not slide the iron around. Lift it straight up. If the logo or the lifted seam is longer than the iron, work along it one section at a time, overlapping each press slightly.
-
Let it cool, then check. Wait until the area is completely cool, then peel the paper back slowly. If an edge is still lifting, press once more for 5 to 10 seconds. Two passes is the maximum.
-
Press from the back (optional). Turn the suit inside out, cover the back of the logo or seam area with baking paper and press for 10 seconds. This helps the adhesive grip the fabric from both sides.
- Let it cure. Wait 24 hours before wearing it in the water, then rinse and care for it as usual.
Please don't
Our care guide usually says no iron, because direct heat breaks down the elastane that gives the suit its stretch. The baking paper and short press time are what make this repair safe.
- Don't use steam or a hotter setting than synthetic or silk
- Don't let the iron touch the bare fabric, the logo or the tape
- Don't leave the iron sitting in one spot or press for longer than 15 seconds at a time
- Don't press more than twice
- Don't stretch the fabric while pressing
If it doesn't hold
If the logo or tape still lifts after two passes, part of it has already come off, or the seam underneath the tape has opened, stop there. Email a photo and your order number to info@surfaceathletic.com and we'll take care of it under your 12-month warranty, either with a replacement logo by mail or a repair.
