Built the way outdoor gear gets built
Surface started in Vancouver in 2024, out of a frustration that anyone who swims will recognise: Compared to your sportswear, swimwear is stuck in the stone-age.
So we built swimwear the way outdoor gear gets built. Italian technical fabric. Seams bonded instead of stitched. A single layer through most of the piece, with lining only where it earns its place. Then we tested it in cold lakes and open ocean until it stopped shifting, stopped chafing, and dried before we wanted to change.
Purpose
The best gear disappears
You should not be thinking about your swimsuit. Not adjusting it on the walk down, not checking it after a dive, not waiting on it before you can put clothes back on.
Every decision we make is measured against that: does this make the piece easier to forget about? If it does not, it does not ship.
Technology
We measure it, then we say it
Watersports has been slow to get the materials work that running and climbing take for granted. That gap is the whole opportunity.
When we say a suit dries faster, we mean we soaked four of them to saturation and weighed them on the same schedule until each hit its dry weight. Ours reached it while the others were still carrying water. The chart on the home page is that test, not a claim.
Community
The water is the point
Most of what keeps people out of open water is not ability. It is not having anyone to go with, or not feeling like the sort of person who does that.
So we swim together. Popups, group dips, sessions with people who were nervous a month ago and are not now. It is the part of this we would keep doing whether or not it sold anything.
The most sustainable suit is the one you keep
Nothing we could put on a label matters as much as how many summers a piece lasts. So that is what we build for first.
The fabric is chosen for shape retention and recovery, which is the technical way of saying it does not go slack and baggy after one season in salt and sun. Seams are bonded rather than stitched, so there is no thread to fray at the points that take the most wear. Every piece carries a 12-month warranty, and the care guide is one page long because keeping it alive is genuinely one habit: rinse it in fresh water.
Buy one piece you wear for three seasons instead of three you wear for one, and you have already done more than any material claim on this page can do.
On materials we can be specific. The fabric is a recycled polyamide knit, milled in Italy, certified to both Oeko-Tex Standard 100 and the Global Recycled Standard. Our packaging is 100% biodegradable, and we donate to Greenpeace and the Surfrider Foundation, because the water we build for needs defending.
None of that is the main event. A suit you wear for three seasons beats a recycled one you replace every year, which is why the durability comes first on this page and the certificates come second.
